The Deputy Vice-Chancellor(s)
According to Section 32 of the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001, the following provisions pertain to the appointment and roles of Deputy Vice-Chancellors in each public university:
- Each public university is allowed to have a maximum of three Deputy Vice-Chancellors. Their appointment is made by the Chancellor, based on the recommendation of the University Senate and with the approval of the University Council.
- Deputy Vice-Chancellors serve a term of five years and are eligible for re-appointment for one additional term.
The First Deputy Vice-Chancellor has the following responsibilities:
(a) Assisting the Vice-Chancellor in performing their functions, with a specific focus on the academic affairs of the university.
(b) Acting as the Vice-Chancellor in their absence.
(c) Undertaking any other functions delegated by the Vice-Chancellor or assigned by the University Council.
The Second Deputy Vice-Chancellor has the following responsibilities:
(a) Assisting the Vice-Chancellor in performing their functions, particularly in overseeing the university's finances and administration.
(b) Taking charge of the university's planning and development.
(c) Carrying out any additional functions delegated by the Vice-Chancellor or assigned by the University Council.
Additionally, it is stated that the National Council must ensure the establishment of the University Council within six months of establishing the respective university.
